How to choose a tattoo artist.
Four things to check before you send a single message.
- 01
Does their portfolio show healed work?
Fresh tattoos look good on everyone. Healed work tells you the truth. Look for photos taken weeks or months after the session, that's where you see how the lines hold, how the color settles, and whether the detail survives real skin.
- 02
Do they actually specialise in your style?
An artist who does everything well is rare. An artist who does one thing exceptionally well is who you want. If you want fine line, find someone whose entire portfolio is fine line. Style match matters more than proximity, price, or follower count.
- 03
Can they actually execute your idea?
Liking someone's portfolio is not the same as knowing they can do your specific piece. Look for work that's close to what you want, similar subject, similar scale, similar complexity. If you can't find it in their portfolio, ask before you book.
- 04
Have you tried the design in AR first?
Walk into a consultation knowing exactly what you want, size, placement, and reference. Use AR try-on to test the design on your actual body before you contact anyone. It saves time for you and earns respect from the artist.

What makes a tattoo artist "right" for me?
The artist who repeatedly nails the style you want, at the size you want, on real bodies, not the one with the most followers. Consistency across their portfolio matters more than one perfect piece. If every photo looks different, keep looking.
How can I tell if an artist is actually good for the style I want?
Look for repetition. If you can't find 10+ solid designs in the style you're looking for, you're gambling. A fine line specialist should have a portfolio full of fine line work, not one or two pieces mixed in with everything else.
Why should I care about healed photos?
Fresh tattoos can look flawless for days. Healed work shows line stability, shading consistency, and how the tattoo actually settles into skin. If an artist has no healed work in their portfolio, you have no idea what you're actually getting.
How do I avoid choosing an artist based on hype?
Ignore follower count and viral posts. Judge consistency, healed results, placement sense, and whether their portfolio matches your references. The best artists for your piece are often not the most famous ones in the room.
What should I send when I first message an artist?
Style, placement, approximate size, and 3-5 reference images that show what you're drawn to. Short, clear, and specific beats a long story every time. If you've tried the design in AR, send that screenshot too, it tells the artist more than words can.
Can I book directly through Inkjin?
Yes. Artists on Bookpay have a booking page at inkjin.com/@username. For every other artist, find them in the Inkjin app and book there. You submit a request, they review it, and if it's a fit they send you a quote and a deposit link. No DMs, no lost messages, no chasing.
What if an artist's books are closed?
It means they're not taking new bookings right now. You can still browse their portfolio. Choose "Notify me when open" to join their waitlist, and you'll get an email when they open their books. Some artists let you send your idea while you wait.
Do I need to pay a deposit?
Yes. A deposit secures your date and confirms the artist's time. It's standard practice across the industry and protects both sides. On Inkjin, the deposit amount is set by the artist, you'll see it clearly before you confirm anything.
Can AR help me choose the right artist?
AR won't replace the artist's judgment, but it will save you from the classic mistakes, wrong placement, wrong size, wrong vibe. Try the design on your actual body before you contact anyone. Walk into the consultation knowing exactly what you want. Artists appreciate it.
