How much does a hand tattoo cost?

On Inkjin, most hand tattoo designs cost €80-€150. Most hand tattoos are small to medium, so they rarely take a long session.

Hands are harder to tattoo than flat areas like the forearm. The skin is thin, it moves over bones and tendons, and the artist has to work carefully, so a hand piece can take a little longer than the same design elsewhere. Some artists also include one touch-up in the price, so ask about it when you book. For a quick number for your idea, use the tattoo price estimator.

Do hand tattoos hurt?

Hand tattoos are among the more painful spots for most people. The skin is thin, there is little fat or muscle over the bones, and the hands have a lot of nerve endings. The knuckles, fingers and the area over the bones on the back of the hand tend to hurt most.

The good news is that most hand tattoos are small, so the session is short. See our tattoo pain chart to compare the hand with other spots.

Do hand tattoos fade faster?

Yes. Skin on the hands renews quickly, and you use your hands all day: washing, gripping, typing, rubbing them on things. Hands are also in the sun more than most of your body. All of this makes hand tattoos fade and blur faster than tattoos on the arm or leg.

The palms and the sides of the fingers hold ink worst. Fine, thin lines fade fastest. To help a hand tattoo last:

  • Choose a bolder design with thicker lines and some open space.
  • Go for the back of the hand rather than the palm or the sides of the fingers.
  • Use sunscreen on it once it has healed.
  • Expect a touch-up. Touch-ups are common for hand tattoos, often within the first year.

Healing a hand tattoo

Hands are hard to rest, which makes healing trickier than on most spots. You'll wash your hands many times a day, and every time you bend your fingers the skin moves.

  • Wash gently with mild soap and pat dry with a clean paper towel.
  • Apply a thin layer of the aftercare cream your artist recommends. Don't over-moisturize.
  • Don't soak your hands in baths, pools or the sea until it has healed.
  • Wear gloves for cleaning, and avoid harsh chemicals on the area.
  • Don't pick or scratch scabs, even when it itches.

The surface usually heals in about 2-3 weeks, and it can take longer for the skin to fully settle. Follow your artist's instructions and our full tattoo aftercare guide.

Things to think about first

Hand tattoos are almost always on show. You can't easily cover them with clothes, so think about your job and the jobs you might want later. Many workplaces are fine with tattoos now, but some still expect visible tattoos to be covered.

Some artists are careful about tattooing hands on someone who has no other tattoos, for exactly this reason. If it's your first tattoo, a small design on the side of the hand or near the wrist can be a good middle ground. Try the design on in AR first to see how often you'll notice it. With Inkjin you can try on tattoos in AR on your own hand before you book, and find artists whose portfolios show healed hand work.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Talk to us →

Are hand tattoos a bad idea for a first tattoo?

Not always, but they are a bigger choice than most first tattoos because they are always visible and fade faster. Many people start somewhere easier to cover and add hand work later.

How long does a hand tattoo last before it needs a touch-up?

It depends on your skin, the design and how much you use your hands. Many people need a touch-up within the first year, and more as the years go on.

Can I tattoo my palm or the inside of my fingers?

You can, but ink holds poorly there and often fades or blurs unevenly. Many artists will warn you about this or suggest a different spot.

Can I go to work right after a hand tattoo?

Usually yes, if your job keeps your hands clean and dry. Jobs with lots of hand washing, dirt or chemicals make healing harder, so plan the timing.

What designs work best on the hand?

Bold, simple designs with clear lines and some open space. Ornaments, flowers and symbols that follow the shape of the hand tend to look good and age well.
